The Acoustics & Signal Processing Laboratory

”Safe, quiet, and healthy life through acoustics research"

Texas A&M University College of Engineering

About Us

“Safe, quiet, and healthy life through acoustics research.”

The Acoustics and Signal Processing Laboratory (ASPL), founded in 2009, is a research laboratory of the J. Mike Walker ’66 Department of Mechanical Engineering at Texas A&M University (TAMU), College Station, Texas, USA.  It is located at James J. Cain ’51 Building (JCAIN) #308.  Prof. Yong-Joe Kim currently serves as the director for the ASPL.  The ASPL specializes on analytical and numerical analyses of wave generation, propagation, and reception in gas, fluid, and elastic media (including biological media), experimental investigations of aero-, hydro-, and vibro-acoustic systems, and related signal processing.  The current research interests are in acoustics, applied signal processing, vibration, dynamics, and biomechanics.  In particular, the followings are the research areas of focus:

  • Noise and vibration control including acoustic metamaterials
  • Ultrasonic structural health monitoring
  • Array-based acoustical and medical imaging
  • Acoustics in oil/gas wells
  • Computational modeling analyses including Finite Element Method (FEM), Computational Aeroacoustic Analysis (CAA), Boundary Element Method (BEM), and Statistical Energy Analysis (SEA)
  • Acoustophoresis in microfluidic devices for cell mechanotyping
  • Mechanical and electrochemical characterization of cells and exosomes
